Federations
Federations fixes what had long been one of Stellaris’s thinner systems — diplomacy. Federations are no longer just “an alliance for the sake of it”; they now carry real strategic weight of their own.
What’s actually in it
Multiple federation types each lean into a different focus — trade, military, research — and the type you join or found shapes your mid-to-late game diplomatic strategy significantly. The Galactic Community adds a shared multilateral stage where every empire has a say, and the resolution debates alone are genuinely fun.
Who should buy this
If diplomacy makes up a meaningful part of how you play, or you play a lot of multiplayer, this expansion adds substantial depth. If your style is “keep your head down and expand/fight,” and you rarely interact diplomatically with other empires, the payoff is more limited.
What's Included
- Reworks the federation system with multiple federation types and dedicated bonuses
- Adds the Galactic Community diplomatic layer
- Adds special government options like the Custodian
Pros
- Federation depth is massively improved — no longer just a nominal alliance
- The Galactic Community adds a whole new layer of multiplayer-friendly maneuvering
Cons
- Limited direct payoff for players who don't engage with diplomacy at all
Is It Worth It?
If you enjoy diplomacy or frequently ally with the AI or other players, this is very high value. Pure military-expansion players who rarely engage in diplomacy can rank it lower.
