MegaCorp Trade Build: Building an Economy Around Commerce

MegaCorp-style empires build their economy around trade value and branch offices, rather than raw territory — the core isn’t “how much land do I hold,” it’s “how far do my trade routes reach.” Corporate Dominion is the real civic that anchors this: a society where a megacorporation has fully supplanted the state.

Why A-tier

The economic ceiling on a trade build is very high, especially once branch offices start extending into other empires’ territory, giving you a conversion rate on resources that outpaces standard expansion. The trade-off is that trade value needs some time to ramp up early on, so the immediate output in the opening turns isn’t as strong as a straightforward expansion build — hence A rather than S.

What Corporate Dominion actually gives you

• +1 external recruitable leader per class.
• The ability to build private colony ships — a genuinely different colonization tool from the standard approach.
• Starts with the Offworld Trade Companies technology already unlocked, a real head start on the trade economy.
• Access to the Mercantile diplomatic stance (unless you’re also running Inward Perfection, which conflicts with it).

It’s restricted to Oligarchic authority, and incompatible with Xenophobe/Fanatic Xenophobe ethics or the Forever Cruise and Sacred Path origins — worth checking these restrictions before you commit to the build at empire creation.

What to do early

• Corporate Dominion pairs naturally with Merchant Guilds — both lean into trade value and branch-office-adjacent play.
• Get branch offices established near trade hubs as early as possible — their value compounds over time, so an early start pays off disproportionately in the mid-to-late game.
• Maintain good diplomatic relations with your neighbors — branch offices depend on the other empire allowing you to operate in their territory, and prolonged war will badly limit your expansion options.

Scaling it up mid-game

Once your trade value has built up, invest in fleet composition dedicated to trade protection (see Ship Design Basics) — piracy and trade raiding will noticeably drag down your income curve if left unchecked, and escort fleets are an easy-to-overlook but critical part of making this build work.
