Does Stellaris Have Multiplayer? How Does It Work?

Stellaris supports multiplayer, but a multiplayer game plays quite differently from a single-player one in a few important ways — worth understanding before you jump into one with friends.

How to set up a game

The game has a built-in multiplayer lobby you can access directly, supporting friend invites or matchmaking through your Steam/Paradox account. The galaxy settings, AI empire count, crisis strength, and other parameters are all set by the host.

Is cross-platform play supported?

PC and console versions generally can’t play together — multiplayer requires everyone to be on the same platform (e.g. everyone on Steam, or everyone on the same console platform). Whether this changes is subject to updates, so check the in-game multiplayer lobby for the latest status.

A few differences to expect in multiplayer

• Slower pace: multiplayer games wait for every player to finish their turn actions, so a single session typically runs much longer than solo play.
• More realistic diplomacy: reading a real player’s diplomatic moves (alliances, betrayals, trade) is much harder to predict than AI — and a lot more fun because of it.

Advice for your first multiplayer game

Get comfortable with the basic controls and core mechanics in single-player first (see the Beginner’s Guide) before jumping into multiplayer — the faster pace and lower error tolerance in a multiplayer game go a lot more smoothly once the basics are second nature.
