Dark Matter Thrusters are the highest-tier ship propulsion component, offering the best sublight speed in the game — but they run on Dark Matter, a strategic resource, not just alloys.

Thrusters determine your ships’ sublight speed, and Dark Matter Thrusters sit at the top of that progression — but unlike most upkeep costs, which are limited to Energy and Alloys, Dark Matter Thrusters specifically require an ongoing supply of Dark Matter to function.

Why the resource requirement matters

Dark Matter is a strategic resource, meaning your supply is typically limited by specific deposits, events, or trade rather than something you can simply build more production buildings for on demand. If you don’t have enough Dark Matter income (or a reserve) to cover a design using these thrusters, ships using them will idle at the shipyard waiting for the resource to become available instead of completing their upgrade — worth checking your Dark Matter income before committing your entire main fleet to this upgrade.

When it’s worth prioritizing

  • Your empire spans a large territory and fleets frequently need to redeploy across long distances to support different fronts.
  • You already have a reliable source of Dark Matter (through deposits, salvage, or trade) and won’t be leaving ships stalled at the shipyard.

Weighing it against earlier thruster tiers

Early on, with limited tech and no reliable Dark Matter income, a standard thruster tier offers better value for the cost — there’s no benefit to designing your whole fleet around a component you can’t consistently supply. Upgrade propulsion incrementally as both tech and Dark Matter income allow, rather than locking in a design your economy can’t support; plan the iteration pace alongside Ship Design Basics.
