Enigmatic Fortress
The Enigmatic Fortress is a massive guardian space station that spawns in a random class A star system, defended by named platforms (Ancient Vault, Guardian, Warden, Defender, Sentinel). After defeating its defenses, you have limited time to complete a follow-up event chain before it repowers and must be fought again.
The Enigmatic Fortress is one of the more mechanically distinct Guardian encounters — it’s a fixed space station (not something you “discover” via a science ship survey), guarded by five different defense platforms: Ancient Vault, Ancient Guardian, Ancient Warden, Ancient Defender, and Ancient Sentinel, each running standard ship components you can scout and counter like a normal fleet engagement.
Two stages: combat, then a timed event chain
- Defeat the defense platforms. Since they use regular ship components (kinetic artillery, dark matter shields, neutronium armor, point-defense), you can actually check what you’re up against and design a counter-fleet the same way you would for any other fight — see Ship Design Basics.
- Complete the follow-up event chain before the timer runs out. This is the part that catches people off guard — if you don’t finish the event chain in time, the Fortress repowers itself, and you have to defeat the defense platforms all over again.
A shortcut for machine empires
If you own the Machine Age DLC and your empire has a Machine or Mechanical founder species (or meets certain tech/tradition prerequisites), you can skip the event chain entirely and unlock the Enigmatic Fortress trait and the Leviathan Tech Genesis technology directly.
Why it’s worth doing
The Enigmatic Fortress remains one of the most rewarding pieces of content from the original Leviathans DLC, and understanding the two-stage, timer-sensitive structure ahead of time means you won’t get caught having to re-fight the defense platforms because you didn’t realize the event chain was on a clock.
