Ring World

A Ring World is a massive artificial habitat built encircling a star, made up of multiple independent segments, offering habitable area far beyond what a normal planet count could provide.

A Ring World is arguably the most direct payoff among megastructures when it comes to “livable area” — completing one is roughly equivalent to gaining several planets’ worth of habitable space in a single project, and you can develop it in segments rather than all at once.

A critical warning before you build

Once the frame finishes construction, every existing planet in that system is removed. Combined with the restriction that you can’t even start building if the system already has habitable planets, this means a Ring World is fundamentally a “clear the system and start over” project, not something you add alongside existing colonies. Make sure you actually want a clean slate in that system before committing.

The flexibility of segmented development

Each segment of a Ring World can be developed toward a different specialization (one segment dedicated to research, another to military production, for example) — a level of flexibility a standard planet can’t match, and one of the reasons it’s so valuable for mid-to-late game resource planning.

Planning advice before you build

Because a Ring World takes a long build time and a large resource investment, it’s worth planning out each segment’s intended specialization ahead of time rather than deciding after construction finishes — front-loading that planning maximizes the efficiency benefit of segmented development.
