Starbase
A Starbase is a multi-purpose outpost built within a system, handling border claims, shipbuilding, military defense, and economic bonuses — its capabilities scale up with its level.
Starbases are one of the most underrated structures in Stellaris — far from being “just where you build ships,” different levels and module loadouts let them serve border claims, trade protection, and military defense all at once.
The level progression and what unlocks
Starting from an Outpost, a starbase gains more module slots as it levels up. Higher levels mean it can serve more functions at once — for example, handling both shipbuilding and area defense simultaneously.
Module loadout basics
- Border/resource systems: prioritize modules that boost resource output or trade protection.
- Frontline military positions: stack defense modules (batteries, shield generators) and pair with a garrisoned fleet for an effective defensive anchor.
- Core shipbuilding hubs: prioritize modules that increase shipyard count and build speed, to keep your main fleet’s replacements coming faster.
Common mistake
Don’t upgrade every starbase with the same cookie-cutter loadout — a border outpost and a core shipbuilding hub serve completely different roles, and matching modules to their actual job gets you far more value than uniform upgrades across the board.
